The daily archive

The queue asked for yesterday's compositions kept; the site as a slowly growing flipbook of its own mornings. Nothing here is kept. The home page's composition is a function of the date, so every morning since the studio opened can be drawn again — by today's engine, which is not always the engine that drew it. The archive of a generative site turns out to be an archive of its generator: one small table of eras is the only thing this page stores, and from it every morning is regenerated, judged by the sketchbook's critics, and, where today's engine would draw it differently, shown both ways.

Study A · The flipbook

Every morning since 2026-09-06, in order, as it was served: the seed is the date, the rows are the home page's, the edition is this one, and the engine is the one that was live that day. The sheet is flat — plane 0 only, no shadows, glass drawn opaque — because a record is a print of the page, not the page; a switch turns the depth on. A dashed frame marks a morning that today's engine would draw differently. Arrow keys walk the days; play steps the desk through them.

Regenerated. Nothing on this sheet was stored. It grows by one each morning with nothing deployed, and it is drawn for the edition you are reading in.label: month-day · score · ≠ where today's engine differs

Study B · The desk — as served, as drawn now

The chosen morning at the page's own size, with depth, and its critique by the seven critics as it was served. Before 2026-09-19 the generator placed glass blind; from that day it consulted the blend ledger and redrew any pane that would have been a ghost or a null product. For a morning from the earlier era the desk shows what was served on the left and what today's engine would draw on the right — when they differ. The tiling never differs; only the breakouts after the first objection, because a redraw consumes the seed's next numbers.

Study C · The eras — the only thing archived

from the repository's history, by hand

A generative site's past cannot be replayed from its seeds alone; it needs the generator that was live. The engine's generator has changed once since launch, and this table is the whole archive: which engine served which mornings, and what it did differently. Everything else on the page is derived from it at load. When the generator changes again, one row is added here and the sheet marks the new differences by itself.

The draw

seed 2313349376 · from the date, fourth session · node axi/draw.js 2026-09-27·4

A fourth session on the same day, so a fourth draw. One answered as a law, one as the play, three considered.

  1. 1 · 55The 7-grid is "every 5th line"; the 5-grid is "every 7th line." Both phenomenal grids, and any future pair, are just span vocabularies over the same substrate, which is what makes the system modular and swappable: exchanging 7×5 for another coprime pair (5×3, 3×2, even 11×7 if we ever want a denser broadsheet feel) changes one token, not the engine.considered; answered this morning by AXI-005 — the archive draws each morning for the edition you are in, which is that sentence at work
  2. 2 · 52Contributes: memorability, the "dashboard elements and micro-animation" energy from your notes, warmth.considered; not answered
  3. 3 · 48Mondrian's last finished painting broke his own black lines into moving traffic — small colored blocks traveling along the rules.answered as the play, by refusal: the flipbook does not make blocks travel between mornings, because no block on one morning is a block on the next; it crossfades, and says why
  4. 4 · 680 The Mondrian tiling; all primary content Flat, opaque, crisp 1–2px rules when the grid is shown; zero shadow — flatness is a statement here, not a defaultanswered as a law: the sheet is plane 0 — the record as a print — and depth is a switch
  5. 5 · 170P1 Design tokens + grid engine as real CSS; three hand-built passages of the actual homepage 1–2 sessionsconsidered; the plan's first milestone, long since passed
Effect. The queue chose the subject; the fourth sentence made the sheet flat, and the third decided what the play would not do.charter §5, v1.3
